Schmuck als künstlerisches Medium in der Galerie Biró
1992 wurde die Galerie Biró von Olga Zobel Biró in der Münchener Maxvorstadt, unweit der Pinakotheken, gegründet, als weltweit einzige Kunststoffschmuck Galerie. Das strenge Konzept der Galerie hatte sich zum Ziel gesetzt den ästhetischen Aspekt des Materials, das unser Jahrhundert prägte, aufzuzeigen. Mit großer Freude entdeckte Olga Zobel Biró damals die holländischen Künstler Gijs Bakker und Paul Derrez, oder Peter Chang, aus Glasgow, Thomas Gentile aus New York, Pavel Opocensky aus Prag, nur um einige zu nennen. Alle schufen zu der Zeit wunderbare Schmuckstücke aus Kunststoff. Der erste Katalog der Galerie „Kunststoff Schmuck Kunst“ entstand.
Auch durch internationale Ausstellungen und Publikationen wurde der Kunststoff über die Jahre salonfähig. Nach der anfänglichen Pionierarbeit erweiterte sich das Konzept der Galerie. Mit der Zeit wurde es selbstverständlich, dass Schmuckkünstler mit unterschiedlichsten Materialien arbeiten, die explizite Hinwendung zum Kunststoff somit obsolet.
Zum 10-jährigen Jubiläum der Galerie, im Jahre 2002, erschien ein weiterer Katalog, dieser war nun den Sammlern gewidmet, weitere Publikationen folgen. 2022, zum 30-jährigen Jubiläum erschien der vorerst letzte Katalog, dieser ist eine persönliche Hommage der Künstler an die Galerie. Einige letzte Exemplare sind noch über die Galerie bestellbar.
Mit internationalen Ausstellungen, wie in Sarajevo, Melbourne, Tallinn, Nicosia, oder Budapest haben wir den Schmuck einem weiten Publikum bekannt gemacht. Seit 2000 kuratiert die Galerie Biró auch in Cagnes sur Mer, Frankreich, fortlaufend internationale Ausstellungen zu denen immer begleitend ein Katalog erscheint. Im Jahre 2016 übernahm das Museum „Villa Stuck“ mit einer eigenen Publikation die für Frankreich konzipierte Ausstellung „GlAmour“ für München.
Von 2010 bis 2025 war Kinga Zobel als Partnerin in der Galerie tätig. Mit ihren eigenen Projekten erweitert sie das Angebot der Galerie und kümmert sich um die Digitalisierung. Eines ihrer ersten Projekte war die „SCHMUCK-Show“ im MaximiliansForum in München.

Jewelry as an artistic medium at Galerie Biró
Founded in 1992 by Olga Zobel Biró in Munich's Maxvorstadt, near the Pinakotheken, Galerie Biró is the world's only gallery dedicated to plastic jewelry. The gallery's strict concept aimed to showcase the aesthetic qualities of the material that has shaped our century. Olga Zobel Biró was delighted to discover Dutch artists Gijs Bakker and Paul Derrez, as well as Peter Chang from Glasgow, Thomas Gentile from New York, Pavel Opocensky from Prague, to name just a few. All of them created wonderful plastic jewelry at that time. The gallery's first catalog, "Kunststoff Schmuck Kunst" (Plastic Jewelry Art), was published.
Over the years, international exhibitions and publications helped make plastic jewelry more widely accepted. After the initial pioneering phase, the gallery's concept expanded. It became commonplace for jewelry artists to work with a variety of materials, making an exclusive focus on plastic obsolete.
For the gallery's 10th anniversary in 2002, another catalog was published, this time dedicated to collectors. Further publications followed. In 2022, on the occasion of the 30th anniversary, the latest catalog was released—a personal homage from the artists to the gallery.
A few copies are still available for order through the gallery. Through international exhibitions in Sarajevo, Melbourne, Tallinn, Nicosia, and Budapest, we have introduced jewelry to a broad audience. Since 2000, Galerie Biró has also curated ongoing international exhibitions in Cagnes-sur-Mer, France, always accompanied by a catalog. In 2016, the Museum Villa Stuck took over the organization of the exhibition "GlAmour," designed for France, and published its own catalog for the Munich presentation.
From 2010 to 2025, Kinga Zobel has been working as a partner at the gallery. With her own projects, she expanded the gallery's offerings and manages digitalization efforts. One of her first projects was the "SCHMUCK-Show" at the MaximiliansForum in Munich.
